3 Ways to Create a Space with Soul

by Leanne Marchand

Have you ever walked into a space that made  you take a deeper breath? You may think to yourself …this feels so good, and you are instantly inspired. Perhaps you can’t quite put your finger on why or how the room speaks to you, but there is a certain alchemy that exists.

Many of us want to be able to express ourselves through our home and desire the ability to create a place that feels good. Somewhere that we can regulate, feel nourished and alive. Undoubtedly, this desire can  feel very overwhelming if we don’t know where to start, putting us in a state of freeze on what to do next.

There are a couple things you could consider if you want to create a space that truly speaks to you.

CURATE A HOME WITH VINTAGE

A soulful home is one that is full of personality, one that does not look  like  a generic cookie cutter of every design you see online.  There is no better way to inject personality than layering in carefully sourced vintage pieces. Start by searching for vintage furniture that resonates with you  and overtime you will start honing your skills and recognizing what speaks to you.  Remember, mixing different periods together  and finding the right balance with each piece is going to take time to curate, so go slow and enjoy the process. You can visit local antique fairs, furniture stores in your community, or look to some sources online. Some of my favorite sites  are Charish, 1st dibs or Etsy. Adding a second hand piece of furniture to your home is Inherently special,  it's one of kindness that carries  its own story.

LAYER WITH INTENTION

Adding layers to a room can instantly add a cozy and inviting vibe. But, when it comes to interior design, what does “layering” even mean? Answer:  it can mean many things. Layering is done with rugs, lighting, furniture, window treatments, art, texture and pattern - just to name a few!  It is all the pieces that come together and add life to a space.

MIX MATERIALS

Creating a palette for your home that uses a mixture of different wood tones creates a far more interesting story than having just one type of wood throughout your entire space.

I often reflect on where this idea came from, that all materials had to match.  It has been ingrained in our psyche since childhood that all wood must match because we saw our parents purchase full bedroom sets that were  identical. The bed frame, nightstands and dresser were all the same type of wood and for many years this was the trend. I am constantly asked by clients “can I mix wood tones?” If you’ve ever thought the same thing, you’re not alone. The answer is yes, you can (and should!) in order to create an interesting space.

Choosing finishes that patina over time will also add character to your home. Unlacquered brass, honed marble, a butcher block countertop, and natural wood floors will age and gain more beauty as time passes on.

By incorporating these tips into your space, you can transform it into a soulful sanctuary that nurtures your well-being and uplifts your spirits. Remember, creating a space with soul is all about infusing it with elements that speak to your heart and bring you joy. Embrace your creativity and intuition to design a space that truly reflects who you are.
